The ‘AOK Ident’ app: Secure access to digital health services for AOK policyholders

Using the“AOK Ident” app and your GesundheitsID, you can easily log in to the electronic patient record (ePA) – and, from autumn 2026, to the online portal and the “Meine AOK” app as well. This makes the “AOK Ident” app the central security key to your digital AOK applications.

What is the ‘AOK Ident’ app?

The “AOK Ident” app is the digital identification app for AOK policyholders in the healthcare sector. It allows you to create and manage your personal HealthID – your digital identity, which you use to log in to healthcare services such as “Meine AOK” or the electronic patient record (ePA – in the “AOK Mein Leben” app).

Put simply: the Health ID is your digital ID card. And the ‘AOK Ident’ app is the application where this ID card is stored and which you use to access it. You’ll need a smartphone to do this.

How do I set up the ‘AOK Ident’ app?

To use “Meine AOK” in future, please download the “AOK Ident” app from the App Store or Google Play Store when prompted. Once you have opened the app, you will be guided through the registration process. You will need your electronic health card (eGK) and your email address. Once registration is complete, you will be asked to verify your identity:

Identity verification – an overview of your options

Online using your identity card or passport (if you do not have an ID PIN)

  • Download the free ‘NectWallet’ identification app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  • Have your German identity card (issued from August 2021 onwards), your passport or residence permit to hand.
  • Start the verification process and switch back to the “AOK Ident” app.

Online via the “AOK Ident” app using your ID card PIN or eGK PIN

  • Have your identity card, residence permit or electronic health card (eGK) to hand.
  • Enter your PIN.
  • Confirm your identity straight away.

Via POSTIDENT at a Post Office branch

  • Have the POSTIDENT voucher sent to your personal email address via the “AOK Ident” app.
  • Go to your local Post Office branch.
  • Present the POSTIDENT voucher and your identity card or passport there.
  • Have your identity verified by a member of staff at the post office.

In future, this option will also be available:

At your AOK branch

  • Book an appointment at an AOK branch.
  • Bring your identity card or passport with you to the appointment.
  • Have your identity verified on the spot by your AOK contact person.

Important to know: PIN for the eGK or identity card

You can only use your electronic identity card or electronic health card (eGK) for identification in the “AOK Ident” app with the corresponding PIN. You can obtain these PINs from various sources.

You set the PIN for the online ID function of your identity card yourself: when you applied for the card, you received a PIN letter containing a one-off PIN, which you then convert into your own six-digit PIN – conveniently via the app on an NFC-enabled smartphone or directly at the Citizens’ Office. If you have forgotten your PIN or misplaced the letter, you must apply for a new PIN in person at your local citizens’ office.

The PIN for your eGK, on the other hand, is provided by your AOK – it is not automatically included with the card, but must be requested separately. You can do this online if you have an identity card with an activated online ID function and your own PIN, your current NFC-enabled eGK and an NFC-enabled smartphone. If you do not meet any of these requirements, the easiest way to apply for the eGK PIN is in person at your local AOK branch.

What’s changing: The ‘AOK Ident’ app is becoming a standalone app

Until now, the ‘AOK Ident’ app has been closely linked to the ‘AOK Mein Leben’ app for managing the ePA. This is set to change: the Ident app will become independent. You will then also be able to register or log in to ‘Meine AOK’ using the ‘AOK Ident’ app.

Important to note: In future, when you log in to the ‘Meine AOK’ app, your access authorisation will be verified in the background via the ‘AOK Ident’ app. When logging in via the web at meine.aok.de, you will be prompted to scan a QR code, which will then redirect you to the ‘AOK Ident’ app for access verification. The “AOK Ident” app thus becomes the central access key for your digital AOK services. On modern smartphones, you can also quickly and conveniently authorise the app using Face ID or your fingerprint. This requires that your biometric data has been recorded and activated on your smartphone.

What are the benefits of the ‘AOK Ident’ app?

With just one app, you can manage your access to multiple healthcare services – instead of having to remember different login details. Using your personal Health ID, which is stored in the ‘AOK Ident’ app, you will in future be able to access further digital healthcare applications. In future, you will also be able to use the Health ID as proof of insurance – as an alternative to the electronic health card – for example at your GP’s surgery.

How do I create and use the Health ID?

You can create and manage your Health ID directly in the ‘AOK Ident’ app – once you’ve completed the one-off identification process (see info box above), it’s ready to use straight away. Use of the app is, of course, voluntary, but for security reasons it is required in order to use ‘Meine AOK’ and the ‘AOK Mein Leben’ app.

The “AOK Ident” app itself is additionally protected: Every use of the app must be authorised, for example via fingerprint, Face ID or password. At regular intervals, you must re-confirm your identity – using the methods mentioned above. Thanks to this standard, it is ensured that only you can use your Health ID.

How is my data protected?

The security of your data is of the utmost importance. To prevent unauthorised persons from accessing your sensitive data, we use what is known as two-factor authentication (2FA for short). This means that, instead of simply logging in with a password, you need a second form of verification to prove that you really are who you say you are. With the “AOK Ident” app, this involves having your smartphone with the app installed and providing personal authorisation – for example, via fingerprint, Face ID or a password. A stolen password alone is therefore of no use to criminals.

Your data is stored in encrypted form in a data centre in Germany and processed in accordance with European data protection regulations.
